Birdwatching In Qinghai |

Qinghai lies in the
Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which has an average elevation of 3000
m. The Yangtze River, Yellow River, and Mekong River originate
in Qinghai, from which the name of "the source of the rivers"
derives. Snow mountains, ice peaks, deserts, vast pastures and
lakes dotted like stars in the sky and flocks of rare birds
and animals weave its unique, fascinating and colorful natural
landscapes. Qinghai Lake, the largest inland alpine saline lake
in China, attracts thousands of tourists for its charming.
Bird Island of Qinghai Lake: 300km from Xining, the famous Bird Island is on the western side of Qinghai Lake. More than thousands of wild geese, gulls, cormorants, sandpipers, extremely rare black-necked cranes and many other birds live there. In order to avoid bad weather, some birds such as bar- headed goose, migrate to the warm place to spend the cold winter. So, only visit between March and early June, you can see birds in quantity.

Drive through narrow roads to Beishan, spend a couple of hours birdwatching there. Target species here include: Brown Accentor, Pied Wheatear, Mongolian Trumpeter Finch, Sinai & Pink-tailed Rosefinches & Przevalski's Partridge. Stay in Qinghai Hotel. |

Drive 50 km to Datong County, birdwatching at Laoyeshan Hill and Dongxia Gorge, in the afternoon drive back to Xining, Stay in Qinghai Hotel. Laoyeshan is a forested hill where has some excellent birds, including: Rufous-breasted Accentor, Siberian Robythroat, Tickell's Leaf Warbler, Yellow Streaked Warbler, Hume's Warbler, Greenish Warbler, etc. |

Drive 230 km to Heimahe, on the way birdwatching at Erhai Lake, Stay in Heimahe Guesthouse. Erhai lies at southeast of Qinghai Lake, and it was seprated from Qinghai Lake by a dyke. The River Daotanghe flows from east to Erhai. |

Birdwathcing at Heimahe area, Stay in Heimahe Guesthouse. Heimahe is a little village to the south of Qinghai Lake where groups of Yaks and Sheep gathered on the grassland, hopefully you will see Black-necked Cranes around this area. |

Drive 130 km to Dashuiqiao, birdwatching at Dashuiqiao and Xiangpishan, Stay in Heimahe Guesthouse. |

Drive 320 km to Wenquan, Stay in Wenquan Guesthouse. |

Drive 150 km to Madoi, Stay in Madoi Hostel. Madoi is a county with an altitude of 4,300 m where snow is not uncommon in summertime, the source of Yellow River is in Madoi region. |

Drive 360 km to Yushu, on the way birdwatching at Yematan, Stay in Yushu Hotel. Yematan is a firtile grassland, occasionally you can see Black-nacked crane here. |

Drive 220 km to Nangchen, birdwatching on the way, Stay in Nangchen Guesthouse. Nangchen is a county in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, the rolling grasslands, dramatic limestone and sandstong cliffs, and pristine nature reserves combine to make Nangchen one of the most interesting and unspoilt parts of Kham Region. |
