China
is made up of 56 ethnic groups. The Han people make up 91.02
percent of the total population, and the other 55 national
minorities 8.98 percent. They are Mongolian, Hui, Tibetan,
Uygur, Miao, Yi, Zhuang, Bouyi, Korean, Manchu, Dong, Yao,
Bai, Tujia, Hani, Kazak, Dai, Li, Lisu, Wa, She, Gaoshan,
Lahu, Shui, Dongxiang, Naxi, Jingpo, Kirgiz, Tu, Daur, Mulam,
Qiang, Blang, Salar, Maonan, Gelo, Xibe, Achang, Pumi, Tajik,
Nu, Ozbek, Russian, Ewenki, Benglong, Bonan, Yugur, Jing,
Tatar, Drung, Oroqen, Hezhen, Moinba, Lhoba and Gelo. Equality,
unity, mutual help and common prosperity are the basic principles
of the Chinese government in handling the relations between
ethnic groups. The Constitution of the PRC specifies that
all ethnic groups are equal. The state protects the lawful
rights and interests of the minority peoples. Discrimination
against or oppression of any ethnic group is prohibited; all
acts that undermine the unity of the ethnic groups or create
splittis among them are forbidden.
There are 55 minorities living in China,
most of them live in the backward west part, where they have
kept their unique cultures and customs for several thousand
years, and they celebrate their own festivals which are really
