Tibet is cold in winter, cool in summer and generally dry, receiving only 450 millimeters(18 inch) of rain or snow. Sunlight is extremely intense. The thin air neither blocks nor holds heat, so sunshine feel warm, shadows are chilly, and temperature can vary greatly within a day, exceeding 29degrees in desert areas in summer, and plunging below 4 degrees the same night. Lhasa's night-time lows in winter are around -9 degrees. The higher you go the colder it gets, and the winds in winter are ferocious. Rainfall in southern Tibet occurs intermittently between May and September, bring moisture to barley fields and greenery to the valleys. The most pleasant months for tourism are from April to October. Average temperature, rainfall and sunshine hours in Lhasa.
