Nobody knows exactly how many folk dances there are in Yunnan. Many believe that there are at least 300 different dances with hundreds of names and thousands of dance steps. All of these dances when categorized by style, fall into six big groups, namely, dances to drums, dances to songs, dances to strings, dances to lamps and random dances.
Many dances are carried down from generation to generation. Most of them have been refined, developed and standardized through years of festivals, performances and ceremonies. Now regarded as a live museum of history, the folk dances in Yunnan have recently been protected and preserved in the places from which they originated.
You may appreciate these dances for their the pure beauty as in the primitive Va and Jingpo peoples' dances or for being refined and graceful as in the Dai People's Peacock dance. If you come to Yunnan, you can experience these folk dances, and, at the same time, get to know a little bit about the histories and cultures of the different ethnic groups because there is a wealth of social, historical and cultural information behind every dance.
