The exhibition
building of the Maritime Museum was built at the place where the
first batch of Portuguese landed.
The Museum looks like a special vessel anchored
at the bay where the fishermen lived.
The white outer wall looks like
a ship with three masts full wind. The glass on both sides make
one think of the observation towers.
The inside of the museum is filled with oceanic
atmosphere. At the booking office, is placed a jar of colourful
gold fish.
On the wall there hangs a huge hand-made porcelain
brick painting, carved with a compass and points of the compass.
Inside the Museum there is a piece of relief
sculpture on which is inscribed the arrival of the Portuguese
navigators at Macau. In the exhibition hall below are mainly displayed
the circumstances of the groups of fishermen in the southern part
of China. Visitors can see the tradition of the Macau fishermen
in different halls, such as the story of A-Ma Temple (Ma Kok Miu),
models of different Chinese sailing ships, the display room showing
different kinds of fishing methods and the charts describing the
traditional festivities in Macau. At the garret between the basement
and the first floor, there display models of twelve Portuguese
traditional vessels. On board the model ship, there is a small
screen and through the pictures it shows. One can learn the origin
and the use of the ships and at this floor, one can also enjoy
the model of the maritime academy of a grand ship - Zagarez, which
was built in proportion of the model shipyard in the Museum. The
display on the third floor is to reproduce the great navigational
discovery of journey, narrating the navigation history of east
and west, the model of the bamboo rafts along the Chinese coastal
line and the navigational great discovery of route chart by the
Portuguese in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and exhibits
demonstrating the method of repairing ships sideways.
At the attic of the museum, are exhibits on
display concerning navigational technology and means of transportation.
On the ceiling of the dome are constellations which can be observed
from Macau. The visitors may accordingly try to find out which
constellations they belong to. There are also installed four aquariums
in the museum, which represent different under-water world.
